- NOTE ** Western Red Cedar siding is available in a range of
- sizes, patterns, and grades, offering the
- advantages of natural beauty, design flexibility,
- exceptional dimensional stability, and natural
- decay resistance. Its freedom from pitch and resin
- makes it an excellent base for a wide range of
- finishes.
- NOTE **
- NOTE ** See other WRCLA sections for timber construction,
- cedar decking, and wood trim.

- PART 2 PRODUCTS
-
- 2.1 MANUFACTURERS
-
- A. Acceptable Manufacturer: Member of the Western Red Cedar
- Lumber Association (WRCLA). ASD.
-
- B. Requests for substitutions will be considered in
- accordance with provisions of Section 01600.
- NOTE ** Delete paragraph above or below; coordinate with
- Division 1 requirements.
-
- C. Substitutions: Not permitted.
-
- D. Provide all cedar siding from a single supplier.
- NOTE ** Bevel siding is the most widely used cedar siding.
- It is made by resawing lumber at an angle,
- producing two pieces thicker on one edge than the
- other. One face is saw-textured, the other face
- smooth or saw-textured depending on the grade and
- customer preference.
- NOTE **
- NOTE ** Bevel siding is installed horizontally, providing
- shadow lines which vary with the siding thickness
- selected. It is available in clear and knotty
- grades. WRCLA members also produce finger-joined
- bevel siding in clear and knotty grades, in lengths
- up to 16 feet. The precision-fitted joins are
- virtually invisible and stronger than the
- surrounding fiber. Select grades and other
- features from paragraphs below; delete paragraphs
- not required for project.
-
- 2.2 CLEAR BEVEL SIDING
-
- A. Kiln-Dried Cedar Siding: Western Red Cedar graded to
- meet NLGA "Grading Standards," paragraph 201, and WCLIB
- "Grading Standards," paragraph 106.
- NOTE ** Select grade(s) and surface texture(s) of clear
- cedar bevel siding from paragraphs below, as
- required for project. Delete paragraphs not
- required for project.
- NOTE ** Clear siding provides premium quality appearance,
- ideal for prestigious, upmarket installations.
- Clear V.G. Heart is the highest bevel siding grade.
- All pieces are sawn vertical grain (edge grain),
- have a smooth face of decay-resistant heartwood,
- and are free from growth characteristics that
- affect appearance or performance.
- 1. Grade: Clear V.G. Heart.
- NOTE ** Retain the first subparagraph below if finger-
- joined siding is not allowed. Retain the second
- subparagraph below if finger-joined siding is
- allowed as an installer-option.
- a. Solid wood (finger-joined pieces not allowed).
- b. Solid wood or finger-joined.
- NOTE ** A Clear allows slightly more growth characteristics
- than Clear Heart. Pieces are mixed grain (vertical
- and flat), graded from the surfaced face.
- 2. Grade: A Clear.
- NOTE ** B Clear allows slightly more numerous and larger
- growth characteristics. It is nevertheless highly
- serviceable and often yields short lengths of fine
- appearance from longer stock.
- 3. Grade: B Clear.
- NOTE ** Rustic bevel siding is recommended for use as
- sidewall covering where a rustic saw textured
- appearance is desired. It allows limited
- characteristics that do not detract from
- serviceability.
- 4. Grade: Rustic Bevel Siding.
- NOTE ** Knotty bevel siding is available in three grades,
- each in three patterns: Plain Bevel, Rabbetted
- Bevel, and Wavy Edge Bevel. Select grades and
- other features from paragraphs below; delete
- paragraphs not required for project.
-
- 2.3 SPECIALTY KNOTTY BEVEL SIDING
-
- A. Specialty Knotty Bevel Cedar Siding:
- NOTE ** Architect Knotty(R) grade bevel siding is intended
- to be fully usable with the resawn face exposed
- after trimming to fit stud wall spacing. It
- contains no open characteristics or through
- defects, allowing adhesives on the reverse face to
- secure knots. Supplied kiln-dried, Architect
- Knotty(R) is particularly well-suited for factory
- priming or finishing. Architect Knotty(R) is a
- registered trademark of the Western Red Cedar
- Lumber Association.
- 1. Grade: Architect Knotty(R).
- NOTE ** Select pattern, texture, and finish from the
- subparagraphs below. Delete subparagraphs that do
- not apply.

- Select Knotty. Cross cutting may be required on
- some pieces to yield tight knotted siding.
- 2. Grade: Quality Knotty.
- NOTE ** Select pattern, texture, moisture content, and
- whether rough or dressed from the subparagraphs
- below. Delete subparagraphs that do not apply.
- a. Pattern: Plain Bevel.

- c. Pattern: Wavy Edge Bevel.
- d. Texture: Smooth.
- e. Texture: Saw-Textured.
- f. Moisture Content: Kiln-dried.
- g. Moisture Content: Unseasoned.
- NOTE ** Pattern siding describes a variety of siding
- products in which the boards have machined edges
- and faces to produce interlocking or overlapping
- joints and either smooth surfaced or rough sawn
- faces. Pattern sidings fall into two groups:
- tongue-and-groove and lap.
- NOTE **
- NOTE ** Tongue-and-groove siding can be installed
